While reading about the media's effects on our persuasion, I have to admit I did find it ringing some bells in my head. As someone who used to watch around six hours of TV a day, I definitely saw tons of commercials and ads for cars, food, and even the best places to go on vacation. I would often see a commercial for Friendly's or Domino's and would suddenly realize that I was starving and wanted to get food. I wouldn't really think about it because it never seemed very important. This is probably why they work so well; because we only need to have a few important symbols and messages to get through to us, people don't need to be paying too much attention for them to work. The best commercials are the infomercials late at night. Being really tired, all you really do is listen to what they are selling and then as you go to sleep, you are still thinking about them. However, because you were so tired, the voice in your head that would tell you this product is stupid isn't working. Suddenly this product is the coolest thing ever and it must work because everyone is using it. I really is amazing how powerful a one minute commercial can be.

  1. I HATE when they play food commercials late at night because that is when Im always willing to give into the commercials and buy the items... But they usually appear after it is too late to actually go out and buy the food, but it definately gets me thinking about them!

  2. I agree...every time the magic bullet commercial comes on tv..I know I am doomed. I have never cracked down and got one, but I always think about it. I find myself getting sucked in to the entire infomercial, and hang on every word that they say. Everything they make looks so easy and yummy. The worst part is...I am completly concsious of what these advertisers are doing and I fall for it anyway. Propaganda is all around us, whether we realize it or not.
