Immigration

Ok! So this was one of the pics. I used in my final paper and I just think its so funny! I was writing a paper on Immigration and had never thought of how we were the illegal aliens of the past. It's so crazy...but very true. This definitely gets the point across that we would never expect to suddenly be asked to show ID, and yet that's exactly what the new SB 1070 law is doing in Arizona. Most Americans wouldn't want to be treated like that and this clearly shows that.

So I was watching TV the other day and one of the commercials from the winter Olympics came on. It was one of the many different DayQuil/ NyQuil commercials that had Apollo Ohno starring in it. I had to laugh because every time I saw that commercial during the Olympics, I caught myself loving Apollo Ohno jumping up and ripping his pj's to reveal his USA uniform. While I did cheer him on in the Olympics, the part of me had to keep wondering just why he was on the commercial. Being a speed skater, I guess you might argue that he may get colds all a lot, but even that excuse is quite a stretch. It reminded me of the class discussion we had about how ads and commercials will use famous stars and athletes to sell their merchandise just because people like them and want whatever they have to do with. It really made me wonder just how many people actually bought DayQuil after seeing the commercial. The other thing I found interesting was now that it has been quite a while since the Olympics, seeing it the other night I found it to be less affective than it first was and in a way, I was almost annoyed that they were still running the same commercial. I guess they have to realize that using someone like Apollo will only work for so long before you have to switch to another person!

While reading about the media's effects on our persuasion, I have to admit I did find it ringing some bells in my head. As someone who used to watch around six hours of TV a day, I definitely saw tons of commercials and ads for cars, food, and even the best places to go on vacation. I would often see a commercial for Friendly's or Domino's and would suddenly realize that I was starving and wanted to get food. I wouldn't really think about it because it never seemed very important. This is probably why they work so well; because we only need to have a few important symbols and messages to get through to us, people don't need to be paying too much attention for them to work. The best commercials are the infomercials late at night. Being really tired, all you really do is listen to what they are selling and then as you go to sleep, you are still thinking about them. However, because you were so tired, the voice in your head that would tell you this product is stupid isn't working. Suddenly this product is the coolest thing ever and it must work because everyone is using it. I really is amazing how powerful a one minute commercial can be.
